A while back some of you asked about the difference between cold and hot pressed watercolor paper, so I doodled on a sheet of each.

The main difference between the two is that cold pressed paper is textured whereas hot pressed is satiny smooth, as you can see from the images above.

I’ve also noticed that paint dries more quickly on hot pressed paper, which you can see in blobs 6 and 7, especially.

I’m still getting used to the hot pressed stuff and try to save it for pieces that will have a lot of line work in them, which comes out more smoothly (like this piece or this one). I’m definitely more accustomed to working with the texture of cold pressed paper!

Do you have a preference?

It’s not homesickness. Every weekend washes out the same laundry. I come home for the brevity of a meal, short conversation, and repeat the rinse of college stress. Time flies. Missed experiences. I forget how short this overlap really is. Things start to seem clearer when I can see how much they care and how little I do. Damn. Passion this and dreams that. I’ve just been selfish. Like waking up from a dream and forgetting what it was about. It’s that tip-of-the-tongue deja vu. And now I know what matters. Why they matter.

So caught under the wheels of life’s perpetual motion. Trampled once and it’s hard. Everything is fragile. But they’re not. Worse. They’re transient. Fleeting. Not limited by emotional wear. Broken by immaturity. So easy to forget those that matter and worse to know they should.

After work coming home to a feast. Energized enough only to leave them in the back of my mind. Guilt comes with an appetite. It hurts more than wounds to see them waving so solemnly outside a house that once had a family under it. It’s not homesickness.

It’s regret that this whole time, I’ve lived incompletely, ungratefully, and foolishly. Their lives are passing me by and all I’m worried about is my own. I never believed that there was too little time. Just time we’d rather spend elsewhere. And here it’s wasted. How did anything ever take precedence over them?

Rethink where you let these things go wrong. Rewind to what happened. And realize that you aren’t failing, this stranger under your skin is.
